Fewer Homeless Veterans in the Tampa Area

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced recently a 12% drop in the number of homeless veterans across the nation, since January 2010. Most notably, homeless veterans in Hillsborough County, had its number of homelessness double since 2009, but the number of homeless veterans has decreased in the same time by almost 50%, which means fewer veterans with disabilities on the streets, according to an article on Tampa Bay Online.

Hillsborough takes bi-yearly counts of the number of homeless individuals in-county since 2005. In 2009, over 1,600 of the approximately 9,500 homeless people in the county were U.S. veterans. In 2011, of the 17,000 homeless people in the county, fewer than 900 claimed veteran status.

There are a number of reasons why the number has dropped so significantly. Although it’s possible some veterans are underreporting, and other agencies don’t collect veteran status date, the county operates local programs and services specifically focusing on helping veterans, such as Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program, and Outreach for Life.

The key seems to be local involvement and teamwork with federally funded and operated programs
; however, female veterans that are ending up homeless is still a large problem and it may worsen with the influx of returning troops.
