The deadline has been extended multiple times already, but October 21, 2011 seems to the final deadline to apply for a Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay, according to an article in The-News-Leader. Soldiers, veterans, and their dependants can all apply for the special pay, which was designed to compensate those veterans forced to remain deployed past their separation date. Veterans with disabilities can also qualify for the retroactive pay.
The Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay initiative was originally set up to reimburse service members for suffering "hardships" due to being held past what was to be their last day of service. The military's "stop loss" pay affects soldiers and veterans who were kept past their separation date between Sept. 30, 2009 and Sept. 11, 2001.
Those soldiers and veterans qualifying for the retroactive pay will receive $500 for every "full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status." It was originally believed 145,000 soldiers and veterans qualified for the benefit. Despite an "extensive" effort put forth to locate as many eligible service members, there are still thousands of veterans and soldiers who haven't yet applied for the Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay benefit.
With only a few days left in the benefit, now is the time to apply for veterans, their beneficiaries, and service members alike to collect the compensation they need and deserve.
