Find Out if You Qualify for SSDI Survivors' Benefits

Many people think that Social Security Disability Insurance, or SSDI, could not apply to them if they are not disabled. Of course, it is primarily for those with disabilities, but even if you were indirectly affected daily by a disability, you could qualify. This includes if your spouse was collecting SSDI and then passed away. In this case, the payments would be called survivors' benefits.

You can contact a lawyer to find out for sure if your family is eligible. While it is understandable if you do not so do right away, when it comes to the Social Security Administration, sooner is better. Once you have decided to apply, realize that you could get payments dated back to the day of your spouse's death, or you might only get them the day your application is approved. Either way, you will likely not receive any compensation for months so plan accordingly.

The first step that the SSA will take is to verify that your spouse was indeed getting benefits. The next step is making sure you are eligible. Whether you were still married when your spouse passed away, or divorced, you can get payments. Both children under age 19 who are still in high school and those who are older than that but were disabled before age 22 could qualify, as well.

Keep in mind that in order to get the full benefits, you should be at least 65.
If you are 60, you will receive nearly all the benefits available, as you would if you are any age and have a child who is under the age of 16. If you are 50 and disabled, as well, you will likely receive the full benefit.

Most people are aware that spouses and children can receive survivors' benefits, but a little-known fact is that some parents of the deceased may also qualify for benefits
. As long as they are at least 62 years old and were dependent on their child financially, they can qualify. If you fit any of the categories discussed here, finding a lawyer right away is essential.
