Fish Consumption May Lower Risk of Vision Loss

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a serious form of vision loss.
Those who suffer from AMD and are unable to maintain employment because of their disability may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits.

Researchers have found that older adults who consume fatty fish at least once a week could potentially lower their risk for vision loss. This does not prove that fish eliminates the risk, only that it was found that risks were lowered compared to those had no fish in their diet.

In addition, it has been found that omega-3 fatty acids could also affect the development of AMD. Omega-3 fatty acids can be found in supplements or certain types of fish such as salmon and albacore tuna.

AMD is the leading cause of blindness for older adults. There is no cure for it; however, some treatments can slow down the progression. AMD occurs when there is abnormal growth of blood vessels behind the retina. This can result in severe vision loss.

A clinical trial has also found that AMD may be slowed down by taking:

  • Zinc;
  • Beta-carotene;
  • Vitamin C; and
  • Vitamin E.

Whether or not fish consumption can stop AMD, the American Heart Association recommends it for heart health.

If you suffer from vision loss brought on by AMD, or any other serious physical or mental disability, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a disability attorney who can determine if you are eligible for disability benefits.

Healthy eating may help keep our eyes healthy that's why I eat lots of leafy green vegetables, tomatoes, citrus fruits, poultry, diary products and foods that contain omega-3 fatty acids. These types of food can really help improve and maintain good eye health.
