June 25, 2010 - When thinking about fly fishing, images of suffering veterans do not jump to mind, and vice versa. However, it does make sense that veterans who are suffering from emotional and mental health like PTSD would find solace and tranquility through fishing.
The founders of Montana's Project Healing Water (MPHW) are hoping that battling trout is one battle these veterans are willing to walk into. These waters may be the perfect place in which these veterans may heal.
The MPHW and the Pat Barnes Missouri River Chapter of Trout Unlimited has arranged a retreat to the Klick Ranch in Augusta. This outing is an effort to collect new members and volunteers; people who are looking for a new calling. The MPHW project is attempting to expand not only their outreach efforts in the state, but their fundraising as well.
Exactly like the national chapter, the Montana chapter of Project Healing Waters is devoted to using fly fishing as a vehicle in which to rehabilitate both the physical and emotional issues plaguing veterans. Whereas the national chapter recruits their participating veterans almost exclusively from the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the Montana chapter draws from the VA Medical center at Fort Harrison as well as the Montana National Guard.
Willis Cruse House is a transitional housing home for veterans living in Montana. Most of the residents are formerly homeless and some are dealing with substance abuse problems. Providing these veterans the opportunity to fly fish is giving them a new, stress reducing activity in which to enjoy.
