The Cape Coral Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Facility is right on track and will likely be fully operational on schedule. The Army Reserve training center, which is next to the VA medical facility, has hit a snag, however.
All construction bids were supposed to be issued in September. Those will probably be delayed, however, because BB&T recently took over Colonial Bank. Opinions vary on the effect this will have on the construction timing.
The landowner and developer believes it to be a "minor interruption;" nothing to affect the construction deadline. Others believe the takeover will delay construction approximately a month.
The Reservists training center is being built with a $14.5 million price tag and will be built upon 15 acres of land. It is scheduled to open its doors in 2013, and will accommodate approximately 300 Reservists every year.
The VA medical center, however, is almost 90% complete. It will likely be completed ahead of schedule, and the VA will take control of the building by September at the latest. The facility's furnishings and equipment will be installed over the next 6 months, and it should open in the earlier part of 2012.
The medical facility is being built for $131 million , is still on budget, and is being built to service the 200,000 plus veterans living in Southwest Florida. Additionally, the city is going to generate a foreign trade zone in close proximity to the clinic. It will come to be known as the Veterans Investment Zone. It will do away with all duties on all goods coming in and going out of the country.
