According to an article on WCTV, Florida State University (FSU) plans on raising the standard for campuses friendly to all veterans, which can make transitioning into college life much easier for returning troops, including veterans with disabilities.
FSU is planning 3 specific initiatives to become the most veteran-friendly college campus in the nation. First, the school plans to build a veterans center that will be the epicenter of all resources made available to veteran-students, such as:
Second, the school plans to hire a director for the veteran's center who can put into action the center's mission of finding veterans transitioning to college life, and ensuring those veterans are given full access to everything the center has to offer. That director can also promote these "veteran-friendly initiatives" on a national level.
Finally, the center plans to launch an "annual Student Veteran Film Festival", which can be used to bring veterans' issues to light while highlighting the services the veterans center offers.
The need for such supportive programs is evident as almost 25% of all veterans who have recently left the service enroll in college but they don't finish because they suffer from mental conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or physical limitations, which for many, makes attending classes very difficult.
