According to a report from CNN Health, Bobby Bowden, a retired Florida State football coach, recently revealed how he was being treated for prostate cancer behind closed doors. If you've become disabled due to a severe medical condition, then you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.
While Bowden was still coaching in 2007, he was also being treated for prostate cancer; however, he didn't let word out because he was afraid that his opponents would somehow use it against him. He indicates that he didn't keep it a secret because he was ashamed. It was kept hidden in an effort to protect his role as a coach and his team.
Bowden has since retired (2009), but it was during Prostate Cancer Awareness month that he finally revealed the truth. He urges men to see their doctors and discuss the need to be tested.
Amazingly, he was able to keep this all under wraps, even taking on another name when the doctor treated him at midnight in an unknown Florida hospital.
Prostate cancer, if caught early, can be treatable. The American Cancer Society reports that 1 in every 6 men will be diagnosed, so testing should be done.
