Florida Stroke Victims: Promising New Therapies in Testing Phase

A stroke can often lead to disability, causing an individual to seek Social Security disability benefits when they are unable to work.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that every year in the United States about 795,000 people suffer a stroke. While most survive a stroke, some are left with debilitating conditions such as dysphagia.

Dysphagia is a condition where the ability to swallow is lost, which can lead to aspiration. If material goes into the windpipe instead of the stomach this increases the risk of developing pneumonia.

In a preliminary study, as reported in Bloomberg Businessweek, it was found that stroke patients who have swallowing problems may be helped with brain stimulation, a type of electrical therapy.

An additional medical complication such as pneumonia can lead to a longer hospital stay, decrease recovery time and even increase the risk of death.

In this small study, patients received mild brain stimulation, with electrodes being positioned on the scalp. Improvement was measured on a 7 point scale with 86% of the patients improving by at least 2 points. Researchers plan to conduct further studies.
