In some states, the benefits of receiving benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA), extend beyond monthly checks for living expenses. A cell phone company in Virginia will offer free cell phone minutes for qualified Virginia residents who receive assistance from certain programs, including Supplemental Security Income (SSI). This program is similar to a cell phone assistance program recently offered in Missouri.
According to the Chesterfield Observer, Assurance Wireless will provide some customers with a free phone and 200 free minutes each month. The minutes can be used to call either local or long distance within the U.S., and the offer also includes free call waiting, voicemail, caller ID, and unlimited access to 911.
More than 650,000 Virginians will be offered this service, provided they currently receive public assistance, or are able to prove that they are part of a low-income household. Qualifying programs include; SSI, Medicaid, food stamps, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families, Low Income Home Energy Assistance, Section 8 housing, or the National School Lunch Program's free lunch.
If customers need more minutes, they can purchase them so that their phone service is not interrupted. Assurance also offers similar benefits to New York residents.
