More female veterans are seeking help from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) than ever before. The type of help they are seeking ranges from medical help to mental healthcare.
According to Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY), the VA has the ability to extend one very large helping hand by offering daycare for the children of veterans receiving VA care through their pilot program.
Congress originally gave the VA the green light to initiate the pilot program in at least 3 different locations across the country. Congress allocated $1.5 million in 2010 and $1.5 million in 2011 to launch the program but it never got off the ground. Gradually fading away, the program risks losing future subsidizing because of the delays already incurred.
Sen. Schumer believes the VA has not put any effort into providing the daycare for which they have the funding because it is only in the pilot program stage. With the amount of female veterans seeking help right now, however, the timing could not be more appropriate or needed.
Should the pilot program launch, it would establish daycare inside VA healthcare facilities. The program would provide more than daycare. For those veterans willing to put their kids in the care of licensed, private daycare workers while receiving VA medical care, the pilot program would provide multiple benefits.
Such veterans would be provided stipends. Additionally, through the pilot program, the VA would form more partnerships with federal agencies so participating veterans would have greater access to more programs providing daycare. The program would also cover grandparents, as long as they are the primary caregivers for the veterans' child.
The 2010 money is no longer available. If this year's money is not used by Sep. 20, 2011, the VA will find another use for the $1.5 million.
