Gainesville Transitional Housing Facility Opposed By Some in Community

Plans for an in-foreclosure Gainesville hotel-located at the corner of Tower and Newberry Roads-involve turning it into a transitional housing facility for homeless veterans. Despite the county commissioners approving the zoning application for the transition, many local business owners and residents oppose this development.

People opposing the housing development stressed how much they supported the troops. They felt, however, a transitional housing facility did not "fit in" with the local business and residential scheme. Major concerns brought up included panhandling and crime.

Other opposition to the facility stressed that type of facility would "kill the businesses of the area" because of the domino effect it would have. Because that area is the "gateway to Gainesville," residents fear it would send the wrong message to people visiting the city. Locals opposing the development asked the county commissioners to "reconsider" and then deny the zoning application.

Rescinding their approval, however, would start a fight that would very likely end in court. There are very strict circumstances allowing a development approval to be rescinded, and none seem to apply to this transitional housing facility.

Commissioners were cautioned litigation is the next step should their prior approval be "revisited." Opposition to the facility is also threatening litigation if the commissioners do not revisit their decision. No matter what the commission does, the end result will likely be court intervention.
