Gene Found that Shows Increased Risk of Inherited Prostate Cancer

In a report from US News, a gene has been found that shows an increased risk of inherited prostate cancer. When an individual is out of work for an extended period of time due to treatment and recovery from cancer, they may qualify to receive long-term disability benefits.

A new study found that the HOXB13 gene is linked to a greater risk of prostate cancer, by as much as 10 to 20 times. The gene plays a role in the prostate when it’s first developing inside the mother’s womb and later in life with functioning.

Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System and John Hopkins University School of Medicine indicate the importance of this finding as it relates to identifying which men may be at risk. It could also help determine which men would benefit from early screening.

The gene mutation was found to be more common in those patients who had a family history of prostate cancer. While it has always been known that this type of cancer can run in a family, this is the first time scientists have been able to detect the specific gene. They point out that while it only accounts for a small number of men with prostate cancer, it could still provide insight into how this cancer develops.

Seek assistance from a Deerfield Beach disability attorney if you need assistance with applying for long-term disability benefits or if your claim was denied.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don’t make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you’ve been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S! Contact a Deerfield Beach disability attorney today – 1-888-234-5758.
