Gene Mutation Discovered in One Type of Fatal Brain Cancer

When a severe mental or physical condition-such as an extremely advanced type of cancer-causes an individual to become unable to work, they may have to turn to disability benefits to offset lost income. Depending on the severity of the condition, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.

According to a report from Medline Plus, researchers have discovered a gene mutation in one type of fatal brain cancer, known as glioblastoma. The gene mutation, NFKBIA, is found to be present in 1 out of every 4 patients who suffer from this type of cancer.

This is the first study found to link NFKBIA to glioblastoma. The findings of the study were published online in the Dec. 22, 2010 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

After researchers analyzed 100s of samples of tumors, they found this gene mutation to exist in about 25% of the patients. In previous research, the same gene mutation was found to exist in patients with other types of cancers such as lung, colon, breast, Hodgkin's lymphoma, melanoma and multiple myeloma.

Glioblastoma brain cancer is the most common and fatal type of brain cancer known to affect adults. The gene mutation, NFKBIA, is found to worsen the chance of survival by causing a resistance to treatment and promoting tumor growth.

With this discovery, researchers hope to now find better therapies to fight this deadly type of brain cancer by targeting the particular gene mutation.
