Gene Mutation May Predict Progression of Alzheimer’s Disease

The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease can be devastating to both the patient and their loved ones. This progressive neurological disease many times leads to an individual being unable to work because of memory loss and an inability to cope with daily activities. Social Security disability benefits may be available to help offset this financial burden.

While work continues in the field of medicine to fight Alzheimer's, researchers believe that a gene mutation may predict the progression of this disease. They found that certain people who have a specific type of genetic variation are likely to develop Alzheimer's at a faster rate compared to others.

This gene mutation regulates tau, which is a protein linked to Alzheimer's disease. It plays a large role in the rate at which Alzheimer's progresses.

By pinpointing this particular gene mutation, they may now be able to find a drug that interferes with the protein tau and prevents the disease from advancing.

Tau is not the only protein being examined by researchers. Beta amyloid is another focus for researchers who are attempting to figure out how to block the protein. This latest gene mutation discovery may be an additional way to find a drug that could more effectively treat Alzheimer's.

If you have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's or any other debilitating condition that prevents you from working, Social Security disability benefits may help. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can evaluate your case and determine if you qualify.
