CNN Health reports that a study published in the
Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that
a genetic test may help determine the effectiveness of chemotherapy for breast cancer patients. This new genetic test could lead to improved patient care with the ability to personalize a treatment plan, avoid being given unnecessary drugs, improve healthcare costs and reduce side effects.
The study was done on 310 patients who were in stages 2 or 3 of breast cancer, with tumors that had likely spread to the lymph nodes. Researchers were able to determine the effectiveness of different types of chemotherapy using a genetic test.
While it may indicate some patients won't respond well to chemotherapy, the lead study author says it doesn't mean chemotherapy should be avoided. It may mean that a patient will need more than just chemotherapy.
