Veterans who suffer serious injury to the genitourinary organs are now eligible for
veterans’ disability benefits through The Department of Veterans Affairs.
The Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection Program (TSGLI) will now cover the following injuries:
- anatomical loss of penis, testicles, vulva, uterus, ovaries, or vaginal canal;
- permanent loss of use of penis, testicles, vulva, ovaries, or vaginal canal; and
- total and permanent loss of functional urinary system.
The coverage does not extend to anatomical loss or loss of use to do causes of disease, such as erectile dysfunction due to diabetes. The loss must have medical evidence supporting a
traumatic service-connected injury was the cause.
Veterans who suffered these losses may qualify for retroactive benefits starting from October 7, 2001. The retroactive benefits are capped at $50,000 but
can be added to other TSGLI benefits up to $100,000. The inclusion of genitourinary injuries was made possible through an amendment to the regulations in the Veterans’ Benefit Improvement Act of 2010.
