December 2, 2010 - The Palo Alto Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has been charged with providing improper care and treatment to several veterans who went there for optical services. Several veterans suffered considerable loss of vision because of the improper care and filed lawsuits against the Palo Alto VA medical center. To date, 3 of those lawsuits have been settled, the latest at a $400,000 price tag.
Lt. Kennedy Jr. served in the Air Force and is suffering from vision loss. He was one of 8 patients who received health care from the Palo Alto VA and were notified their vision loss may have resulted from the inferior care they received at the Palo Alto VA medical center. The notifications were generated out of an internal hospital investigation looking into the care and treatment given to both patients with glaucoma and those patients who faced the risk of developing glaucoma.
Hospital policy required either medical doctors or ophthalmologists to oversee all treatment given to patients with glaucoma. Simply, optometrists at the Palo Alto VA Medical Center did not follow this policy. The result was veterans receiving inferior or delayed care that was very likely the cause of their vision loss. Kennedy's settlement was higher than previous settlements because his vision loss prevented him from maintaining employment yet he was still young enough to work.
