Grand Opening Delays for Central Florida VA Medical Facility

Central Florida is an area of high demand for VA medical care, but the thousands of wounded and disabled veterans seeking treatment will have to wait longer as new delays surface for an Orlando VA medical center.

The original project was slated to be completed for a grand opening in October 2011, but has since been delayed to mid-2013. While the actual building structure was completed in February 2011 the facility is only considered to be about 60% complete.

The shortcomings fall on changes in medical equipment, issues with the contractor, improperly sized rooms, and concern for roof leaks. The $665 million project is one of the biggest government projects in Central Florida and will eventually serve 6 counties and reach the 400,000 veterans residing in those areas.

Upon completion, the facility will include a 300-bed hospital, several clinic buildings, a central energy plant, warehouse, parking structures, administration center, and chapel. There will also be a 120-bed community living center and a 60-bed domiciliary.

Central Florida is among one of the most active military veterans areas in the country, yet still lacking in adequate VA medical facilities. This new hospital and extended residential treatment facilities will help provide better access to VA health services to all veterans, especially disabled veterans.
