A study recently reported to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) some of the symptoms brought on by Gulf War Syndrome may be eased by anti-oxidant supplements. According to the Federal Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, of 697,000 Gulf War veterans, approximately 10,000 suffer from Gulf War Syndrome.
Just under 50 veterans participated in the study, which consisted of researchers giving them doses of coenzyme Q10. Researchers noticed improvement in every symptom reported by the veterans.
Those symptoms, which were the same as would be found in patients with mitochondrial disorders, included:
This is the first medication study in the 20 years since the Gulf War ended offering any hope for possible relief from the unrelenting physical problems Gulf War Syndrome causes. Recognizing this study is not indicating a cure for the syndrome, improving symptoms is a huge step in the right direction for veterans and their families.
The study found "unexpected benefits" to the anti-oxidants as well for some veterans, such as improved levels of blood pressure. It is likely this research will be built upon in the years to come.
