It was 20 years ago when U.S. troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf. To this day, veterans of that war continue to suffer from the mysterious Gulf War Syndrome symptoms. To this day, veterans with Gulf War Syndrome have no idea why their health is deteriorating or how to successfully treat their symptoms or the syndrome itself. The majority of those with Gulf War Syndrome simply file veterans disability claims and begin whatever treatment is available to them.
Once other physical issues are rules out, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) "issues ‘presumptive' diagnoses," according to an article in The San Diego Union Tribune. A research team, however, has isolated similar physical issues in enough veterans believed to have Gulf War Syndrome to begin working on developing "the first biological diagnosis."
As opposed to discovering the cause of Gulf War Syndrome, developing a way to diagnose the syndrome would likely lead to more focused, directed, and effective treatment options. If a treatment can be developed it does not matter what caused the syndrome in the first place.
Being able to definitively diagnose Gulf War Syndrome is the first step, and one we cannot presently take. About 25% of the approximately 700,000 veterans who were deployed to the Persian Gulf suffer from Gulf War Syndrome, and about 33% have developed health problems considered to be chronic.
Current research is focusing on respiratory problems people with Gulf War Syndrome seem to suffer from. Although they present many symptoms of inflammatory lung diseases, they seem to test definitively negative for any in the end. Researchers are just beginning clinical trials in the next couple of months.
