Gulf War Veterans Running Out Of Time To File Presumptive Illness Claims

The Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) presumptive illness list has undergone multiple changes over the last couple of years, all of which have drastically affected veterans disability compensation claims. Now the list is undergoing another change, and unless something is done, this could be the end of the presumptive illness list for thousands of veterans, according to an article in City Watch.

As of December 11, 2011, Persian Gulf veterans will no longer be able to file disability claims for any of the illnesses and/or diseases listed on the VA's presumptive illness
list. Therefore, without a proposal to either repeal or extend the December 11 date, hundreds of thousands of veterans will no longer be eligible for this disability compensation.

Almost 700,000 veterans took part in 1990's Operation Desert Shield and/or Operation Desert Storm. According to some research, almost 25% of those veterans developed a chronic illness somehow related to their service overseas.

Soldiers currently deployed to the Gulf are returning with the same diseases Persian Gulf veterans developed. Further, the VA Committee on Gulf War Illness has previously testified as to the importance of repealing the scheduled end-date. Gulf War veterans are the only veterans under such a deadline.
