Heart Disease is Considered a Disabling Condition

If you suffer from heart disease, you should know that it is possible to receive Social Security disability benefits to assist you with your living expenses. Like many health conditions, this disease can range in severity, and your inability to hold employment because of your heart disease is the primary factor in whether you qualify for disability benefits.

The likelihood that you will receive disability benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) also hinges on whether your particular condition meets the medical listing criteria.

Some examples of heart disease include:

  • cardiomyopathy;
  • chronic heart failure;
  • arteriosclerosis;
  • congestive heart failure;
  • ischemic heart disease.

The methods your doctor will likely use to determine if you suffer from heart disease, and to what degree may include; echocardiography, angiography, or electrocardiography. These results will become an important part of your SSA disability case.

In general, you and your doctor need to prove to the SSA that either your heart muscle is too damaged to pump sufficient oxygen-filled blood, or that your blood vessels are blocked. When either of these conditions apply, it is likely that you will have trouble finding employment because of pain, discomfort, or the inability to move sufficiently on a regular basis. If you believe that your heart disease is impacting your ability to make a living, contact an experienced disability lawyer.
