Heart Drug May Lead to Premature Death in Patients with Kidney Disease

Kidney disease is becoming an increasing health problem. It is estimated that approximately 16% of the population ages 20 years and older have been diagnosed with kidney disease. There are more than 500,000 people who are either on dialysis or have received a kidney transplant.

This is a serious condition that can lead to a person becoming unable to work or perform daily functions. The Social Security Administration may provide disability benefits for those who suffer with kidney disease.

Recently, a study found that digoxin, a drug used to treat heart disease, may lead to premature death in patients with kidney disease. The study indicated that dialysis patients have an increased risk of death by taking this medication, especially for those who take higher doses of the medication. The risk of death was 28% higher.

In the United States, there are more than 400,000 people who have end-stage renal disease which requires dialysis. This increases the chances of developing heart disease. The findings of this study indicate that more research needs to be done to determine if digoxin should be prescribed to dialysis patients.
