Help For Prostate Cancer Patients Who Experience Incontinence

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer and the condition and required treatment have led to your being unable to work for an extended period of time, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.

In a report from the Doctor's Lounge, a study finds behavioral therapy may be able to help prostate cancer patients who are experiencing incontinence. It is believed that as many as two-thirds of men will develop urinary continence as a result of prostate cancer surgery.

The findings were published in the Jan. 12 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association and indicate that while it takes work, behavioral therapy can help provide better bladder control.

There was a 55% decrease in the amount of incontinence episodes for those patients who had gone through behavioral therapy which includes learning techniques to control the bladder, pelvic exercises and managing the amount of fluid intake.

Because incontinence can negatively impact an individual's quality of life, these treatment options for prostate cancer survivors are very important. Surgery to correct the problem is already an option but many patients are reluctant to undergo an additional operation after having had one for their prostate cancer.

With any diagnosis of a severe medical condition there is the concern that an individual will be unable to continue working and earning an income should their condition make that impossible
. A Social Security disability attorney can advise you on eligibility of Social Security disability benefits.
