Heroes On The Water Opens Tampa Bay Chapter

There are multiple organizations that have been formed over the years in order to help veterans through difficult times in their lives. Some organizations have very specific goals and are aimed at helping very specific issues.

Heroes on the Water (HOW) wants to help veterans relax. In theory, relaxed veterans work through rehabilitation and reintegrate easier because of their lack of stress. HOW uses the great outdoors, and activities such as kayak fishing, to help veterans reach a relaxed state.

Given the injuries many veterans have suffered, HOW uses adaptive kayaks and other specialized equipment during their guided excursions. This gives injured and disabled veterans more than just an opportunity to get out on the water, it teaches them how to kayak fish. Possibly the most important thing is getting out on the water and hanging out with other fisherman enjoying the outdoors.

Injured veterans captain their own kayaks. They move and fish and their own pace. For some, it is more mobility and freedom than they are used to, and they cherish their time on the water. Their passion grows quickly, and it is very obvious why. Kayak fishing is in itself therapeutic for most, but especially so for veterans still attempting to acclimate to their injuries and trauma.

HOW began in 2007 at Brooke Army Medical Center and now helps soldiers and veterans at multiple other military installations and rehabilitation facilities. Since its inception, HOW has served more than 3,000 wounded soldiers and veterans.
