At a time when Americans are deployed all over the world and engaged in multiple issues, support for our soldiers and veterans has never been more needed or vital. New programs are constantly being developed and added to a multitude of existing programs to help active duty soldiers and veterans in various facets of their lives.
The Heroes to Hometowns program focuses on helping soldiers who have sustained serious injuries as they transition back into their civilian lives following their deployment and service.
The program created and instituted a large support network to maintain necessary services for injured veterans.
Heroes to Hometowns services include:
- temporary financial assistance;
- housing assistance;
- pro-bono financial planning;
- home and vehicle adaptation;
- medical transportation;
- government assistance;
- child care;
- counseling and family support; and
- entertainment options.
Another vital program is Operation Comfort Warriors. This program also focuses on helping soldiers who have sustained injuries. The difference, however, is this program provides the injured soldiers staying at US military hospitals and warrior transition units with "comfort items."
These items are not supplied by the government, and can include:
- calling cards;
- recreational goods; and
- entertainment products.
More than 400,000 soldiers have sustained injuries in Iraq and Afghanistan, and hundreds of thousands have been hospitalized. Programs such as these help recovery and improve morale.
