According to a report from
Reuters,
high amounts of red meat consumption may be linked to kidney cancer. When cancer strikes, time off from work may become necessary during treatment and recovery. This may lead an individual to seek
long-term disability benefits.A large U.S. study specifically finds that
middle-aged adults who consume the most amount of red meat had a 19% greater chance of developing kidney cancer, when compared to those who ate less amounts. Additionally, higher intake of
chemicals found in red meat that was barbecued or grilled was also linked to higher incidences of kidney cancer.
While red meats provide protein and iron, there may be a risk in consuming too much. This doesn’t mean completely cutting out red meat, which provides these important sources; however, it may mean limiting how much is eaten.
Individuals can also
make healthier choices, such as leaner cuts of meat and poultry. Fish and other seafood products are other healthy options.
The American Cancer Society already has recommendations in place concerning the prevention of cancer by cutting back on how much red meat is consumed. They also recommend
avoiding processed meats and healthier cooking alternatives such as broiling or baking.
