High Blood Sugar in Women May Be Linked to High Colorectal Cancer Risk

According to a report from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, high blood sugar in women may amplify the risk of colorectal cancer. Treatment for cancer can be disabling, resulting in an individual needing long-term disability benefits.

A recent study finds that after analyzing data from the past 12 years on 5,000 postmenopausal women, those with higher glucose levels had an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Additionally, in comparison to those in the lowest third, women with the highest third of glucose levels had double the chance of developing colorectal cancer.

However, no link was found between levels of insulin and the risk of colorectal cancer. In the past it was believed that insulin played a role, with levels higher in obese women. It now appears that although obesity is a risk factor, it has more to do with glucose levels instead.

Researchers plan to investigate further into the link between high blood sugar and colorectal cancer. With it being the third most common cancer to be diagnosed with and the third leading source of cancer death, these findings could be extremely helpful.
