High-Fat Diets May Increase a Person’s Risk for Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer
is the 4th most prevalent type of cancer in the United States. This serious cancer can leave an individual disabled and unable to work. Social Security disability benefits may be available to those who are suffering from pancreatic cancer and are unable to work because of their medical condition.

The American Cancer Society reports that this year approximately 42,000 individuals in the United States will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Sadly, about 35,000 will lose their lives.

New research indicates that the risk of developing pancreatic cancer may be increased by consuming a diet that is high in fat, such as can be found in some dairy products or meats.

A study was conducted by the National Institute of Health (NIH), where 1,337 of the participants developed pancreatic cancer. Their diet intake seemed to be a contributing factor to the development of this deadly disease.

It was found that 53% of men who consume a high-fat diet were more likely to develop pancreatic cancer than those who followed a lower fat diet. With the women the risk was 23% higher for those who ate a high-fat diet.

This presents another possible risk factor, amongst others like smoking, obesity and diabetes, which are also found to increase the chances of developing pancreatic cancer.

While further research needs to be done, it appears to support the American Cancer Society's views that a high-fat diet is one of the leading causes of cancer death.
