Hiring Heroes Act of 2011 Helps Veterans Employment

According to an article on MLive.com, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Vow to Hire Heroes Act of 2011 with a 422-0 vote, and the U.S. Senate passed it 95-0. This is good news for both veterans with disabilities and those veterans without.

The bill was very fittingly introduced near Veteran's Day. A definite high point of the bill is how it will be funded. There will be 3 major sources of funding for this legislation, and those sources include the following:

  • higher origination fees on VA loans;
  • ambulance reimbursement fees; and
  • reducing veterans' pensions who are living in nursing homes and covered by Medicare.

Additionally, this bill is going to grant tax credits to businesses that actively grant veterans employment. The amount of tax credits paid out will vary for businesses and will be based on the following:

  • if the veteran(s) they hire have been out of work for over month;
  • if the veteran(s) they hire have been out of work for over 6 months; and
  • if the veteran they hire has a service-related disability.

The bill will also grant veterans the ability to take advantage of job training upon their service separation thereby making them more marketable in the private sector.
