The Hiring Heroes Act was recently introduced to the Senate by Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.). The Act will attempt to use the "incredible skills" veterans possess as a selling point to help veterans gain employment. The problem seems to be veterans' skills do not always translate to civilian resumes.
Along with attempting to help veterans "civilianize" their resumes, the Hiring Heroes Act would also make every service member undergo the military's Training Assistance Program (TAP). Between these two services, it is hoped transitioning soldiers will enter the private sector more prepared to meet civilian employers' needs.
Veterans between the ages of 20-24 are facing a 27% unemployment rate. The Hiring Heroes Act aims to make the military to civilian transition as smooth as possible so as to bring down the number of unemployed veterans as quickly as possible.
The Act has been described as "comprehensive." The mandate for training soldiers before they leave the service will undoubtedly make a marked difference in the way veterans hit the civilian work force. For those still struggling, however, the Act also makes provisions for unemployment benefits and job opportunities.
Ultimately, the bill changes the hiring practices of federal agencies to make hiring veterans a much more attractive option. Further, the Department of Labor will follow-up with veterans to monitor their employment and offer further help if needed.
