HIV/AIDS vaccine set to hit the market in spring of 2009!

Dr. Chil-Yong Kang, a researcher at the University of Western Ontario in London, developed an experimental vaccine aimed at destroying the human immune deficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). Presently, the vaccine is set to undergo a series of toxicology trials on animals to ensure that it is safe to inject into humans. We can expect to read about the results in approximately 3 months!

This is very exciting news for world! If the vaccine is victorious at the toxicology trials, phase 1 of human testing could begin as early as March 2009! The vaccine will be tested in individuals who are HIV-positive, but don't yet have AIDS symptoms, Kang said.

Kang went on to say that, unlike other vaccines, which have used only a small amount of HIV's genetic material, his vaccine uses a whole dead HIV-1 virus, a technique Jonas Salk used in the polio vaccine. "We have engineered a virus in such a way that it can be produced in larger quantities in shorter periods of time and it is also non-pathogenic. In other words, it doesn't cause the disease. We have tested animals and they do respond to the vaccine and we now have to try it in humans."
