December 22, 2010 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has funded programs and assistance plans focused on eliminating homelessness among veterans. Supportive Services for Veterans' Families is the VA's newest homeless prevention program. The plan is to prevent homelessness by giving assistance to veterans and their families before they become homeless by helping them keep their home. Never before has the VA offered veterans' spouses and children facing homelessness such services.
The VA is subsidizing the program and is looking to be able to provide specific aid to those veterans and their families. Through their communities, the VA will ideally supply:
Sec. Shinseki is a proponent of handling issues at their roots, thereby derailing the issue before it becomes a problem. Sec. Shinseki's idea to launch such an intervention program will hopefully reduce distress and increase hope among this specific population. Private, non-profit businesses and consumer cooperatives willing to supply necessary services for the program are encouraged to apply to the VA.
