Homes For Our Troops is an organization making a huge difference in the lives of children of severely injured veterans. According to the Department of Defense (DoD), there are 1.8 million children younger than 18 living in military households.
Homes For Our Troops builds brand new homes specifically tailored to fit the adaptive needs of the severely injured veteran who will inhabit the finished house once completed. The organization's work could not be done without the assistance and donations of hundreds of volunteers across the nation. Homes For Our Troops just celebrated an impressive milestone: they completed their 100th home.
John Gonsalves is the founder and President of Homes, and is thrilled to know his organization has helped 100 military families by helping disabled veterans live independently. In addition to helping disabled veterans and their children, Homes For Our Troops impacts the communities by drawing from the veteran's community to build the home.
There is a growing issue of disability for our returning veterans in the U.S.
Life becomes easier and less stressful for these disabled veterans and their families when they are able to live in a custom-built home that is adapted to their specific disability needs. Adaptive homes can include modifications ranging from wider access to keyless entry systems to lift systems.
Veterans must have a 100% disability rating from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and be approved for the VA Specially Adapted Housing Grant in order to qualify for a custom-built home from Homes For Our Troops. The organization is always in need of funding, supplies, and volunteers and is currently working on building their next 100 homes.
