Hospital Readmissions after Colon Surgery Often Due to Surgical Site Infections

According to Medline Plus, readmissions to hospital after colon surgery are often due to surgical site infections. After diagnosed with a severe medical condition, you may wonder how you’ll care for your family. An inability to work due to a disabling medical condition may qualify you to receive Social Security disability benefits.

A study found that over a period of 6 years, of the almost 11,000 patients who had colon surgery, within 1 month of their discharge, over 11% had to be readmitted. Within 1 to 3 months of discharge, 12% had to be readmitted and almost 7% had to be readmitted 2 or more times within a period of 3 months.

Considering that 1 in 4 patients will find themselves back at the hospital for what is often times preventable, many hospitals are beginning to implement new procedures where nurses are carefully reviewing the patient’s discharge plans and then following up with them afterwards.

Not only is a hospital readmission a financial burden, it can delay the patient’s recovery
. In some cases, it could even lead to a setback in their health.
