Most people who have been through the process of applying for Social Security disability benefits have found that it is not an easy procedure. In fact, many applicants who do not seek help from a disability attorney will have their claim denied. It's estimated that about 3 out of 4 applicants are usually denied benefits, a challenge that the U.S. government is taking notice of and seeking to address.
According to NWTN Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill on Feb. 11 that is intended to improve disability applicants' access to quality legal representation. The bill was introduced by Con. John Tanner, and it received a vote of 412-6.
Tanner is Chairman of the Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security, and is just one of the key sponsors for this bill, called Social Security Disability Applicants' Access to Professional Representation Act of 2010.
This bill makes permanent the temporary-originally set to expire on March 1, 2010-provision allowing expanded access to legal representation. In the future, representatives hope to help simplify the process of acquiring disability altogether.
