Houston Center May Be Great Resource for Disabled Veterans With TBI

Brain injuries are often very difficult to properly diagnose. Given that limitation, it is estimated around 300,000 veterans from Afghanistan and/or Iraq have suffered, or continue to suffer, from some sort of brain trauma. The most common causes of such injuries are blasts and explosions and play a huge role in contributing to veterans' disability.

A new national center in Houston, Texas focusing on brain injuries will hopefully help those veterans suffering from such injuries recover. Being so difficult to diagnose, many soldiers and veterans have untreated brain injuries. Many veterans have mild traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and do not know it, which eventually starts to affect their lives.

Veterans can experience TBI complications ranging from problems paying attention to self-medicating through alcohol in response to stressful situations. Many will not know they have a problem until they attempt to go to school or reenter the work force, which is when problems such as memory loss and difficulty concentrating become apparent.

The Houston facility uses advanced imaging techniques to help diagnose TBIs. Their specialized MRI techniques allow them to see things not visible with standard MRIs, such as actual brain changes. Once TBIs can be accurately diagnosed, better treatments for concussion and blast injuries will hopefully follow. The clinic is currently undertaking 7 different pilot studies focusing on ways to find, diagnose, and treat TBIs.
