How Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Spoil U.S. Soldiers Homecomings

An article in Chatham Patch, details how post-traumatic stress disorder in many U.S. soldiers returning home, often makes their homecoming much more difficult.

“Home-based conflicts” are some of the most common stressors among returning veterans
. Simple “conflicts” about household chores can be “debilitating” to such individuals. Problems arise because when soldiers are deployed, it’s on spouses to make every household decision. When soldiers return, that dynamic changes, and the stress begins to mount.

The happiness felt by veterans and their families upon his or her return doesn’t last, and many are then blindsided by common conflicts not being resolved in common ways, which can be a sign of such things as mental illnesses. More often than not when these illnesses aren’t treated the family disintegrates, resulting in broken homes and lost lives.

Readjustment and reintegration have always been vital issues among returning soldiers, and has always been difficult for some. What’s different with the current wars is that soldiers are being deployed multiple times and that means they and their families have to readjust multiple times, which isn’t easy. Many veterans aren’t given the time they need to adjust to being back inside the U.S. and come to grips with their issues.
