How SSA Needs to Prepare for Future Online Services

According to a report in Information Week, a federal auditor indicates that SSA needs to improve their online services for those seeking disability. Social Security disability benefits may be available if your medical condition meets the listing of impairments and criteria under Social Security Administration (SSA).

While online services of any nature can be easier and more convenient, if an agency isn't prepared for an increase in use, it could result in problems. This has been the trend for disability claims as more people are turning to the internet.

In 2010, 27% of disability claims were filed online. There's hope that this will increase to 38% by the end of 2011; however, SSA will need to develop a long-term plan that'll help prepare for the increase in online use.

According to SSA's Inspector General, the agency will need to do some of the following:

  • set goals on what customers expectations will be;
  • determine what types of services will be delivered online;
  • provide adequate staffing;
  • build timelines for goals set; and
  • put in place performance metrics.

An independent panel that provides guidance to SSA, the Future Systems Technology Advisory Panel (FSTAP), says that they should be ready and prepared to move to an electronic self-service model that sees 90% of its business being done online within the next decade.
