According to a report from the
Doctor’s Lounge, imaging tests for breast cancer patients can determine treatment but raises cost to patients. Social Security disability benefits may be available if you suffer from cancer and it has become disabling.
A new study finds that
compared to the early ‘90s, women today are undergoing more imaging tests between the time they’re diagnosed with breast cancer and surgery. Some of these
tests include MRIs, mammograms, and ultrasounds.
While all of these imaging tests do help doctors in deciding the best course of treatment, they’re also very expensive. Treatment for breast cancer in itself can be extremely costly, so with the testing, those expenses can significantly increase.
The study specifically found that
in 1992, less than 5% of breast cancer patients had undergone imaging tests 2 times or more during the preoperative period, averaging 37 days; however,
by the year 2005, this had increased to almost 20% of patients.
Researchers indicate that
patients should have discussions with their doctors about why imaging tests are being ordered and if they’re necessary. Additionally, it’s more cost effective to have imaging tests done at the same time, so patients may wish to ask about this as well.
