Important LTD Findings from 2011 Council for Disability Awareness

When disability strikes, you may be wondering how you're going to care for yourself and your family while unable to work. Long-term disability benefits can help offset your income during this time.

The Council for Disability Awareness has released important findings from the 2011 Council for Disability Awareness Long-Term Disability Claims Review. This annual review provides a summary of long-term disability (LTD) claims, identifying important trends.

The following are key findings in the latest review that studied trends from 2009 to 2010.

  • $8.3 billion paid in LTD benefits;
  • economic struggles have caused a high increase in new claims;
  • 587,000 people received LTD benefits due to disability (0.3% increase from 2009);
  • 139,000 new disabled persons were approved for LTD (2.6% increase from 2009);
  • over 95% of disability claims weren't job-related;
  • leading cause of disability claims continues to be musculoskeletal system and connective tissue conditions;
  • 2nd leading cause of claims are related to diseases of the nervous system and sense organs;
  • 3rd leading cause of claims are diseases of the circulatory system;
  • new cases of cancer remains as 2nd leading cause of disability and 4th for ongoing claims;
  • claims from employees under the age of 40 are increasing; and
  • claims for mental disorders increased.

If you have a serious medical condition that disables you from working, then you should speak with a Ft. Lauderdale long-term disability lawyer to learn what legal options you have to pursue disability benefits.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S! Contact a South Florida long-term disability lawyer today - 1-888-234-5758.
