It's been 12 months since the investigation into Arlington National Cemetery. After the cemetery's accountability problems and failure to keep accurate records were exposed, and the previous management team removed, Secretary of the Army John McHugh installed an entirely new management team. The improvements made over the last year have been impressive.
The new management team has taken specific actions to right the wrongs done by previous management. The team's first goal is to "restore the nation's confidence" that Arlington is being operated as it should.
The report issued by the Army's Inspector General following its investigation last year highlighted 74 specific actions that would need to be taken to bring Arlington's operation back up to par. Every single recommendation has been addressed by the new management team.
Additionally, the management team took actions to ensure the management team itself stayed strong.
Specifically, they put into action a wide-ranging plan to:
- improve management;
- improve oversight and accountability of overall operations; and
- sustain the cemetery for future use.
Addressing the cemetery's failed accountability, the new management team used technology, aerial photographs, and global positioning systems to ensure grave markers match the cemetery's burial records. This will lay the foundation for a new, searchable database, which is in development.
Newly developed custody procedures, management systems, and a customer care center formed the groundwork for the cemetery's improvements.
