Increase in Applications from Baby Boomers Prolongs Social Security Disability

According to a report from The St. Augustine Record, an increase in applications from baby boomers, along with a struggling economy and loss of jobs, the wait for Social Security disability benefits has become longer. With millions of people in the U.S. applying for disability, not only has the wait time increased but so have the number of rejections for benefits.

Obtaining benefits requires more than just being out of work or unable to work. To qualify for Social Security, the condition must be considered severe. This means an individual’s disability has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or is expected to be fatal.

There is another option for those who have certain conditions that qualify. The fast-track system allows for quick approval of certain health conditions such as early onset Alzheimer’s or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

If an application is rejected
though, whether going the fast-track system or through the general claims process, wait times could last as long as a year or longer.

With the claims process being so complicated, you may be able to improve your chance at having your claim accepted the first time around if you seek legal counsel. You should
speak to a Palm Beach County disability lawyer to learn if you would benefit from having legal representation on your side.
