If you suffer from a debilitating health condition that has caused you to stop working and you are not able to function on a daily basis, then Social Security disability benefits may be available; however, time seems to be an issue.
According to USA Today, a new report shows that the goal to reduce waiting times on Social Security disability claims may be difficult to meet, with the current increase of pending cases.
The report also shows that there are currently 728,000 individuals in the United States awaiting an appeals hearing for their claim. It is believed that much of this increase is a result of the economy, with jobs becoming harder to find.
Social Security Administration (SSA) had a goal to reduce the average waiting time of 367 days to 270 days by the year 2013. Considering the increase in claims and the federal budget cuts that has affected Social Security, this goal may not be achievable.
Only time will tell, is the message coming from SSA's Commissioner, Michael Astrue. He indicates that it is possible they can meet that goal although it may be close.
