Increases Needed in VA Health Services for Female Veterans

October 4, 2010 - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has a duty to provide health care services to all veterans, without regard of that veteran's background, race, or sex. Their mission is simple: take care of American veterans.

One of the fastest growing segments of American veterans right now is female veterans and they demand the same level of health care as male veterans. Over the last 9 years, 230,000 females served in Iraq and Afghanistan and make up about 15% of the active duty military.

Female veterans are entitled to the same level of health care as male veterans. At the same time, however, female veterans sometimes demand different types of health care. For example, over 20% of all women coming to the VA for health care have been the victim of sexual assault. Female veterans are also 9 times more likely to suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder than male veterans and as it stands, 1 in every 10 soldiers returning from Iraq suffers from PTSD.

This current situation is tense. The VA is attempting to rapidly establish the necessary programs and environments to properly fill the needs of the female veterans as more female veterans seek VA care every day. According to a recent Government Accountability Office (GAO) audit, most VA clinics are unaware of what they need to do in order to bring their clinics in line with the VA's 2008 mandate that medical facilities must offer comprehensive women's care.

Although not able to handle as many female veterans as they would like, the establishment of the Center of Excellence for Women's Health (CEWH) is a step in the right direction. The CEWH is made up of the Women's Prevention, Outreach, and Education Center (WPOEC), the Women's Trauma Recovery Program (WTRP) and a local VA hospital. These clinics are women-driven and geared towards helping female veterans heal among other female veterans.

Hopefully more programs of this nature will become available at all VA health centers and give female veterans the opportunity to seek the care they need.
