Increasing Prescription Drug Abuse in United States

Those who suffer from painful or debilitating illness may need to use several prescription drugs to control the symptoms of their disease. When a medical or mental condition makes it impossible for you to work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits to help cover monthly expenses.

Disabled individuals who rely on various prescription drugs may want to heed the warning issued by a White House study that has revealed that there is increasing prescription drug abuse in the United States.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA) released findings that followed a decade of patients 12 years old and older who reported abusing prescription drugs.

The results reveal that prescription drug abuse has increased by 400%. It also revealed that this problem affects every gender, race, age, nationality, educational background, location and level of employment. In other words, prescription drug abuse is a problem that affects a wide variety of Americans.

Some of the ways health officials hope to bring about greater awareness of this issue may include:

  • Urging people to get rid of unused or expired prescription drugs;
  • Educating doctors about opiate painkiller prescribing;
  • Expanding monitoring programs to every state; and
  • Cracking down on pill mills (of which there are many in South Florida).

Prescription drugs are often a necessity for those who are suffering from a debilitating condition. If you or someone you love suffers from a severe mental or physical condition, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability lawyer who can help you determine eligibility.
