Inflammatory Diseases Could Be Helped with New Treatments

Inflammatory diseases can leave a person disabled and unable to work. The Social Security Administration recognizes certain inflammatory diseases on its Listing of Impairments that qualify a sufferer for Social Security disability benefits. This means that a person suffering from a painfully debilitating inflammatory disease may get benefits to help them if their disability leaves them unable to earn a living.

Arthritis, a common type of inflammatory disease, can be crippling. Some of the types of arthritis that produce inflammation and can lead to disability include:

  • Rheumatoid arthritis;
  • Gouty arthritis;
  • Shoulder tendinitis or bursitis; and
  • Polymyalgia rheumatica.

There is hope that inflammatory diseases could be helped with new treatments. The University of Utah has found that a particular hormone saved mice from deadly acute inflammation.

Hepcidin, a hormone that helps to regulate iron balance, could be the key in helping to reduce inflammation for those patients who are suffering from it. It could actually produce an anti-inflammatory effect which would reduce inflammation.

Some of the other types of inflammatory conditions that could be helped from this include:

  • Inflammation as a result of surgery;
  • Injuries or burns;
  • Transplanting of organs; and
  • Bacterial infections.

The next step for these researchers is to put together clinical trials involving humans.
