CNN Health reports that a preliminary study shows the potential for insulin to treat Alzheimer's. When Alzheimer's strikes an individual, it can lead to an inability to work and the need for Social Security disability benefits.
A study in the journal Archives of Neurology, indicates that intranasal insulin (delivered through the patient's nose), could help those with mild to severe cases of dementia.
While the study is small, it does pave the way for larger clinical trials to be conducted. Insulin helps to repair cells, so researchers believe the potential is there to treat cells damaged as a result of Alzheimer's.
Insulin has also been found to prevent the formation of a biomarker found in Alzheimer patients' cerebrospinal fluid, known as tau. Additionally, it can protect a patient from the toxic effects of a protein found in brain plaques, beta-amyloid.
So far the small study has shown success in improving memory and daily functioning. There were mild side effects such as a runny nose and headache, however, nothing severe.
The potential is there but much more research will be necessary. If a loved one suffers from a disabling condition such as Alzheimer's, then you should speak with a Palm Beach County Social Security disability lawyer about the possibility of qualifying for disability benefits.
