A new study reveals that intensive treatment for prostate cancer may be unnecessary. Generally, men who receive a diagnosis of prostate cancer face intensive treatment such as radiation therapy or surgery. This can lead to the need for long-term disability benefits as the patient undergoes treatment.
This new study shows that it may be unnecessary, since in many cases the cancer is not likely to otherwise spread or become fatal. This trend was found after researchers collected data from a prostate cancer registry of 123,934 men. These men had been diagnosed with prostate cancer between the years 2004 and 2006. In 14% of the cases the men were not likely to develop fast-growing tumors.
In addition, more than half of them were found to have low-risk disease, yet they were still likely to go through intensive treatments as much as those with high-risk disease.
More than 75% of the men had undergone radiation therapy or prostate surgery. These intensive treatments can cause numerous side effects which can include erectile dysfunction and incontinence.
It is believed that some of the men would have been better off taking a less intensive route of treatment and instead, been monitored regularly.
